Collection includes diaries, 1909-1912, 1968-1973; family correspondence, 1903-1977; financial records; photographs; clippings; certificates, etc. Series I includes biographical and financial materials, records about her education, journals and desk calendars, photographs, and James's postcard collection. Series II contains correspondence, photographs and some financial records of James Pharmacy. Series III consists of letters from family and friends, and condolence letters sent to James's niece, Ann Petry, after James's death.

Anna Louise James was born in Hartford, Conn., to Anna Houston and Willis Samuel James. The name recorded on James's birth certificate is Louise Clegget James. She graduated from Arsenal Elementary School (Hartford) in 1902 and Saybrook (Conn.) High School in 1905. Writer Ann Petry grew up in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, the youngest of three daughers born to Peter and Bertha James Lane. She earned a degree in pharmacy from Connecticut College of Pharmacy in 1931 and worked for several years in the family pharmacy.
